Privacy policy

What RubiksCu.be stores in your browser, which cookies and third parties it uses, how to clear everything, and why we never collect personal data.

An independent cubing project. RubiksCu.be is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any brand or cube maker, and in particular not by Rubik's Brand Ltd or Spin Master, who own the Rubik's trademarks. On this site, "Rubik's Cube" is used as the everyday name for 3x3x3 cube puzzles in general, of any brand.

Short version: we do not collect personal data, and we do not have accounts. Your times and settings stay in your browser. The only third parties are an anonymous visitor counter, ad partners, and a content network that delivers the pages. In Europe the counter and the ads use cookies only after you agree in the cookie banner.

What is stored in your browser

The site saves a few things on your own device so they are still there next time:

  • Your solve times, scrambles and the stats made from them (timer).
  • Your settings: cube colors, animation speed, color-blind letters, sound on or off.
  • Your progress in the tutorial and which algorithms you marked as learned.
  • Your answer in the cookie banner.

This data lives in two places that every browser has: localStorage for small settings and IndexedDB for the solve list. It never leaves your device. We cannot see it, and if you switch browser or phone it will not follow you. To clear it, delete the site data for rubikscu.be in your browser settings. In Chrome that is under "Delete browsing data", explained on Google's help page. The timer also has a "Clear history" button that wipes the solve list only.

Your times stay in this browser. Export them to a file if you want a backup.

Cookies and consent

In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, a banner asks if you agree to cookies when you first visit. Until you say yes, nothing is set except the note that you have seen the banner. In other countries there is no banner by default, and these cookies are on from the start. Once they are allowed, two kinds of cookies can be set:

  • Google Analytics, in consent mode, counts visits and which pages are read. IP addresses are not stored by it, and we only see totals such as "2,000 people opened the timer this week".
  • Ad partners may set cookies to show ads and to measure them. Which partners and what they store is listed in the banner itself.

You can change your mind any time. In Europe, the "Cookie settings" link in the footer of every page reopens the banner. Everywhere, you can turn off personalized ads in Google's My Ad Center, or block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site works the same without them.

Each of them has its own policy: see the Google privacy policy for Analytics and YouTube, and the Cloudflare privacy policy for the network. Videos on the site are shown as a still picture first. The YouTube player, and its cookies, load only when you press play.

The camera feature

If a camera option is added to the solver, it will read your cube's colors from the picture on your device. The images are processed in your browser and are never uploaded, saved or sent to us. The camera turns off as soon as you leave the solver or close the page.

No accounts, no personal data

There is nothing to sign up for. We do not ask for your name, email or age anywhere on the site, There is no contact form either. If you choose to email us using the address on the contact page, your email is used only to answer you. The server keeps short standard logs (page address, time, browser type) for a few weeks to find errors and attacks. We do not combine them with anything else.

Children

The site is fine for kids, and many of our visitors are. Since we collect no personal data, there is nothing a parent needs to delete or ask about. If you are a parent or teacher and have a question anyway, write to us.
